Help Wanted – 1950s Comic Books

by

I’m in the process of completing (?) my research into Harry Harrison’s comic book art from the late 1940s and 1950s, and I need some help tracking down a few final details…

What I need are listings of the story titles from a couple of dozen comic books. All I need are the story titles, no other details. And I’m not looking to buy copies — unless they’re cheap!

Attack! (Trojan, 1953) #5 and #8  (Not the 1952 editions published by Youthful) [War]

Fighting War Stories (Story Comics) #2, October 1952 [War]

Mysterious Stories (Premier, 1954) #3, 4, 5, 6, 7  [Horror]

Weird Adventures (P.L. Publishing, 1951) #3  [Horror]

Daring Confessions (Youthful, 1952) #7  [Romance]

Youthful Hearts (Youthful, 1952) #1, 2, 3  [Romance]

Redskin (Youthful, 1950) #1 – 10, 12  [Western / American Indian]

Thrilling Adventures in Stamps (Youthful) #8, January 1953  [Stamps]

As far as I can see, these aren’t indexed on the Grand Comics Database, comicbookdb.com, or the Michigan State University Libraries Comic Art Collection index, and they’re not in the Digital Comic Museum.

If you can help, please leave me a comment here or e-mail me — the address can be found on the ‘Contact Us’ page.

    Hi,

    https://harryharrison.wordpress.com/2010/10/04/help-wanted

If you supply me the current requirements (don’t want to waste effort for info supplied subsequently), i’ll send you the info via email.

the request was posted on GCD-chat list, where I read it initially:
    gcd-chat@googlegroups.com

From what I understand, you are after the sty title in each issue, pagecount?; artists who assisted Harry Harrison?
    regards, frank m.

  2. Phil Rushton Says:

I’m afraid I can’t help with HH’s American work but do you have any details of his scripts for UK comics – e.g. Brett Million in Boys’ World?

  3. frank motler Says:

    Hi again,
Here’s the first part of your requests.

Will get to the remainder soon.

    Feel free to ask questions.
    regards, frank m.

    Harry Harrison Stories Part II
Using a list supplied by Paul Tomlinson, I was able to confirm the two suspected stys in: Thrilling Adventures in Stamps Comics #8 (as below)

Below that the romance story queries are solved, plus some new finds, including a Harrison romance cover. This leaves just three outstanding romance queries, from Paul’s list. I have another couple of short-run titles still to check.

Will get to the horror stys next.

  6. frank motler Says:

BTW, during an interview given in Bill Spicer’s Graphic Story Magazine #15, Harry Harrison refers to packaging an issue of Grapevine
    >>
    (online extract)
    http://www.iol.ie/~carrollm/hh/comics-gsm-interview.htm
And I was packaging comics and magazines. Somewhere along the line I put together an imitation of CONFIDENTIAL called GRAPEVINE for Perrin Publications. To be a publisher then as now all you had to do was have a distributor’s contract. That’s all you needed to do business. With the contract you went to the printer. The distributor paid the printer’s bill. So all you had to do was lay out a thirty-two page magazine at twenty-five dollars a page, a thousand bucks of your own cash, and you could be a package publisher.

Never had any luck before now tracking this down (although it is documented in an Alan Betrock reference)

After sending this info to Paul, I decided to google it.

Lo & behold a copy of cvr & ToC page is now available online:
