Rick Random – Space Detective

Artwork: Ron Turner, colour by John Ridgeway

UK publisher Prion have reprinted 10 of the old Rick Random comic stories in a chunky volume compiled by Steve Holland. Why am I telling you this? Because two of the stories, The Space Pirates and Rick Random’s Perilous Mission, both from 1958, were written by Harry Harrison.

I received my copy of the book today – the black and white artwork by Ron Turner is  really, really good.

Steve Holland has a blog where he has posted stories about the creation of the Rick Random book cover and about the contents of the volume.

If you want to get hold of a copy of the book, Steve’s site links to the Amazon page you need. The book is a snip at £8.99 for over 600 pages of comics.

There has been some confusion in the past about which stories HH wrote for Rick Random – back in 1978 the story S.O.S from Space was reprinted in the 2000ad Sci-Fi Special, where it was attributed to HH, though this wasn’t actually one of the ones he wrote. I thought HH wrote The Mystery of the Robot World, but it turns out that was written by Conrad Frost and Barry Coker: HH wrote a story called Robot World for Boys World comic, not for RR.

At this point I’m not sure whether HH wrote only the two stories contained in Steve Holland’s book, or whether there were more: I shall try and find out…
