Stainless Steel Art (19)

by

I mentioned artist Peter Elson a few posts back, and how his covers for UK editions of the Stainless Steel Rat series were the images of the character that I first encountered (closely followed by the Carlos Ezquerra comic art in 2000ad). Here are two more of the cover paintings by Elson, from the Sphere paperback editions.

There isn’t a great deal of information about Peter Elson on the web – a stub on Wikipedia and a couple of unofficial sites – like this one – with examples of his artwork. As far as I know there was only ever one collection of Elson’s work, Parallel Lines which featured Elson’s paintings and Chris Moore’s. The book didn’t include any of the HH covers though.

Peter Elson also did covers for the Deathworld trilogy in the UK: I’ll find these and post them at some point.

This is ‘my’ era of Rat covers, the time when I seriously started buying the HH back catalogue. Dillons must have made a mint out of me back then! Here’s my personal favourite:

    Ah…Peter Elson.

His artwork sucked me in to the SSR series back in the early nineteen eighties too.

Along with his Deathworld covers and highly detailed work for the Terran Trade Federation books I will always have a soft spot for his gritty and realistic portayal of future vehicles and people.

His life story is quite a sad one when you discover he never made much money out of his work and passed away in relative obscurity.
